These shoes were invariably embroidered with smooth gold zari embroidery, or zardosi and salma sitara, an elaborate embroidery style featuring gold wire, sequins, and frequently the application of beads, pearls, iridescent beetle wings and even precious stones. Less costly derivatives of this courtly shoe are now prized for weddings and ceremonial wear.
